SHATTERING THE PICTURES IN OUR HEADS
ABOUT THE INSTALLATION
This exhibition deconstructs the “Mythic Indian” stereotypes we see in mainstream media through the perspective of members from the Shoshone-Paiute Tribe.
You drive through Owyhee, the headquarters of the Duck Valley Indian Reservation in Nevada, where you will find real individuals, landscapes, and conversations that bring to light the diverse cultural identity of the Native community.
We invite you to experience these first-hand stories inside an immersive video art installation that will include multi-screen art as well as 360 video technology. Our team can’t wait to show you this intimate film project at the Northeastern Nevada Museum in Elko, NV in the 2021 season
THE MUSEUM EXPERIENCE
Wall 1: It will play the first short film on loop every 30 mins. Wall 2 & 3: They will play the second short film filmed in 360° split between two 180° screens.
OUR MISSION
For many years the Native American community has been labeled as monolithic, effectively extinguishing individual and cultural identities.
After seven years of an amazing relationship working with the youth of the Sho-Pai tribes, we want this art exhibition to become an artistic platform for authentic voices and thought-provoking visuals that shatter the misconceptions behind the people of First Nations.
PARTNERSHIPS
Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of the Duck Valley Indian Reservation
The Tribes once freely occupied the land of their forefather's and foremother's in the tri-state area of what are now Idaho, Nevada, and Oregon. This however quickly changed at the coming of the populations from Europe. Descendants of the Western Shoshone and the Northern Paiute occupy the Duck Valley Indian Reservation of Idaho and Nevada. Various bands of the two closely related tribes have jointly utilized the area from time immemorial.

A few thoughts from our team

“I want to be a part of this project because it is very close to my heart and takes a interest into what I'm into. This is a very important topic to talk about especially in the time that we are in right now with all the movements going on and have been going on. This project gets the chance to hear from the people who have been misrepresented in the media for years

“I started making films in the 8th grade. When I started making these films it was a way for me to show the positives of the reservation. It was also a way for me to get things off my mind. To this day my mindset is the same in wanting to show the positives but it is also a way for me to show the potential I have as a person. I am now a college student and for me this is representation of who I am and what I want people to see me as, especially the youth. I think it’s important for younger natives to see that even a small town native can do big things - I want to inspire this upcoming and future generation of kids.”

“I wish to preserve our culture and history any way I can. We have always been behind the scenes and everyone imagines what we as native people are about. ”
